Local Knowledge
Trenton was not built the way the older river towns were. It filled in fast, in one long stretch, and that shows up in the openings.
Abram Caleb Truax settled the site in 1816, on the high ground along the Detroit River, and put up a sawmill, a church and a store. The place went by Monguago and then Truago before taking the name Trenton in 1847, after a limestone quarried here.
McLouth Steel bought the riverfront land in 1948, poured its first ingots the year after, and ran until 1996. Trenton grew through all of it and its population peaked in 1970. That makes most of the housing post-war, which in practice means the first windows were aluminium or early vinyl, and plenty of them are still in the wall.
A city built across a few decades repeats a handful of house plans down a street, so the openings tend to agree with each other room to room. We still measure every one twice, but there are fewer surprises here than in a town that went up over a century.
Trenton's building department requires a permit to repair, alter or change a building, and it is pulled before a crew begins. It is a fair question for anyone bidding your job: who files that, and when.

Usually, yes. A window from that era is either single-pane aluminium or an early vinyl unit, and both are past the life the seal was built for. The frames are often still square, which is in your favour: it means a replacement unit sits into a sound opening rather than into one that has moved.
