In Detail
Insulated siding is vinyl siding that arrives wearing its own coat: a rigid foam backing, shaped to the exact profile of the panel, bonded on before it ever reaches the wall. The vinyl we hang comes from CertainTeed, and the insulated configurations are the same fade-resistant panels with the thermal layer built in.
The insulation inside a wall sits between the studs, which means the studs themselves are bare bridges from the warm side to the cold side, and a framed wall is striped with them. A foam layer applied outside the sheathing crosses those bridges instead of stopping at them, wrapping framing and cavities alike in one continuous blanket. Insulated siding delivers that layer without a separate foam-boarding job, because the coat is bonded to the cladding that was going up anyway.
The foam does a second job nobody advertises: it fills the hollow behind the panel. Filled panels hang stiffer and lie flatter along a wall that has moved with eighty Michigan winters, resist the dents and rattle that hollow vinyl can develop, and mute the drum of hard rain. On an older Downriver house whose walls have never been perfectly true, the difference shows from the curb.
Standard CertainTeed vinyl is already a durable, fade-resistant wall, and it costs less; if the house has sound wall insulation and the budget is tight, it is a fine choice. Insulated earns its premium on homes with little or no insulation in the walls, on the north and windward faces that take winter first, and on any project where the goal is the tightest envelope the re-side can deliver. The inspection is free either way, and the estimate prices both so the comparison is yours to make.
Upkeep is the same as any vinyl wall we hang: wash it down when the season turns, and forget it otherwise. The color runs through the panel, the finish never needs paint, and the foam behind it never shows its face again after installation day. It is the rare upgrade that works hardest in January and asks nothing in July.

It depends on the wall. Homes with little insulation in the walls, cold north faces, or a comfort problem the furnace cannot fix are where it earns its premium. On a well-insulated house standard vinyl may be the smarter spend, and we price both at the estimate so you can see the gap.
